how are we helping?

  • safe place

We offer a safe space for infants to learn and develop while still being loved and cared for in a secure environment.

  • second chances

Coley’s Crib gives mothers a chance to get themselves together without the fear of their infant going into the foster care system.

  • better timing

We give mothers and infants a better chance of reunification. We offer a 30-day window for mothers to make their choice as opposed to the 7-day window enacted by the current MN Safe Haven law.

- Mary Francis coley

“We live in such a noisy world that many of us have come to be afraid of silence. We think that if only we do a great deal, it does not much matter what we are.“

Minnesota safe place for newborns law

Under the current Minnesota Safe Place for Newborns Law, mothers have seven days to physically hand their newborns, unharmed over to a licensed hospital, a healthcare facility that provides urgent care, or through calling 911 in order to avoid prosecution. Thus, completely throwing the “anonymous" part of it all out the window.

what if a mother changes her mind?

According to Minnesota Statues, section 260E.20, if prior to an order terminating parental rights, a person presents as the mother or father of a newborn surrendered under the Safe Place law and wants their child returned to their care, the responsible social service agency opens the matter as a child maltreatment case and conducts a Family Investigation.
